The first troupe of
Pioneer Playmakers took to the stage in the fall of 1988 under the direction of Trimella Chaney and they have been “bringing down the house” ever since.
Mrs. Chaney created the
Playmakers to be
Theatre Ambassadors, to promote theatre and the love of theatre, for Watauga High School, Watauga County, and our Region of North Carolina. It is an “audition only” honors level acting class where the advanced acting students can challenge themselves by pushing their acting skills to the highest level with an ensemble emphasis.
For 18 of those years, the
Playmakers have distinguished at the North Carolina Theatre Conference “One-Act Play Competition”, winning many individual and ensemble honors; thirteen of those years, the
Playmakers advanced to the State NCTC competition as Regional winners of the Distinguished Play award. In 2000 and 2007, the
Playmakers were selected to represent the State of North Carolina at the Southeastern Theatre Competition. The
Playmakers have been under the direction of Sarah Miller, Playmaker class of '89, since 2005.
The
Playmakers have a history of using their talents to serve the community by performing at local elementary schools, the Watauga Coalition for the Prevention of Adolescent Pregnancy and OASIS, a local organization that strives to heighten awareness of and the prevention of physical and emotional abuse.
